A "BASKET CASE" IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE

It's one of the best kept recycling success stories in Middle Tennessee. From the outside, it's pretty ordinary, just a simple office next to a typical, warehouse type facility. On the inside, in a plant so clean the floors shine, a veritable rainbow of baskets are stacked to the ceiling, waiting to be shipped all over the United States, to Europe, to South America, and to the Far East.

Four sizes, twelve colors – with a handle that, like Henry Ford's auto, comes in any color you want, as long as it's black – a handle so sturdy, it's a special feature of the basket – a basket made entirely of recycled material. Sales representative Rod Hall explains,"The handle material comes from Saturn and Nissan venders' engine parts, like this radiator housing; the material for the basket body comes from a variety of injection-molded plastics from other sources."

Understandably proud of The Big Basket Company is its founder, Phil Goodell. The land where the factory

sits was purchased in 1989; by 1992 the company had purchased its first of eight machines and was doing its own injection molding. Goodell explains why he chose this product: "I had experience in the shopping basket industry with the then largest and strongest basket. Using recycled plastic as a 'raw material' made sense. Recycled plastic is usually less expensive than other types of recycled products, so we could afford to make a recycled product that is bigger and stronger than those made by our competitors. In addition, we develop the logos internally and have other proprietary advantages, such as a logo featured on the basket rack header sign"

Baskets from The Big Basket Company are familiar to the average shopper – that's the basket you grab when you have only a few items to pick up at the grocery store or when you shop at the university book store. From start to finish-that's the way baskets are produced at The Big Basket Company – from chipping recycled resources to applying a company's name and logo, which is designed and silk-screened with an enamel, hard ink right at the factory onto the finished product – and even the screens are re-used instead of being discarded! Any waste? Three partly empty trash barrels (for entire factory) told the story. Any left-over plastic can be reprocessed and remolded into another basket with the colors kept separate. Not only does this environmentally friendly Company have a tried-and-true product but is expanding its market successfully. As Goodell says, "Our goal is to become the #1 basket manufacturer in the world." With "limited resources" becoming the watchword of manufacturing as the 21st century commences,-it's certain this company will be in the forefront!
